Frequently Asked Questions
What is Easy Read?
Easy Read is information that is clear and easy to read and understand. It is sometimes called Easy English.
Easy Read uses clear, simple language without any jargon. The text size and spacing are larger than usual to make it easier to read. Images are used to illustrate the main points and make the content easier to understand. Easy Read can be used in many different ways - in documents, forms, surveys, websites, presentations, reports - and many more.
Who uses Easy Read?
Easy Read is used by people with intellectual and learning disabilities, people who speak English as a second language, or people who want simple, clear information. It is becoming more common to find Easy Read information on government websites, in banking, voting, healthcare and many other information platforms. This helps to make sure that everyone can access information and no-one is excluded.
What does an Easy Read service include?
We create a text draft and send it back to you to make sure that the content meets your needs. Once you have approved the wording, we illustrate the content with pictures that are suitably licensed for this kind of work. We can also apply your custom branding and logo. The final files can be delivered in print quality or web quality. You can choose how many formats you need - this can include PDF, Word, PowerPoint, survey, video and other options too. We also have a number of different services to choose from. Find out more about our Full Service, Quick Service, or Ongoing Support.
What does it cost?
The cost will depend on the kind of service that you want done. You can tell us more about the kind of content you need, and when you need it done by. You can also tell us more about how many pages or words you have, or send us an example. We will give you a quote for a service that meets your timeframe and budget.
How long does it take?
It can take between two working days to four weeks. It all depends on the length and complexity of your document or content. It also depends on the level of service you want. We offer a full service which is comprehensive but will take a little longer. We also offer a quick service if you have a smaller budget or you need work done fast. Contact us for a quote so we can discuss a timeframe that works for you.
What images do you use?
We use photographic images and realistic graphics because we believe these are easy, clear and relatable for most people. We also create our own custom images to illustrate the content. However we can also use line drawings or BoardMaker images if that is what you prefer. Our images are suitably licensed for this kind of work.
Will people with disabilities be involved in developing or reviewing the work?
You can choose to engage our Advocate Network on your project. The Network is a team of people with lived experience of having a disability. They are available to make recommendations and review your Easy Read content. They provide feedback in a brief report and identify any areas for improvement. They are paid for their time and the cost will be added to your quote if you'd like to make use of this service. Contact us if you would like to know more about our Advocate Network.
Do you only do Easy Read documents?
No, we do other kinds of work too, to make sure that everyone can read or access your content. That might be a Plain English version, or a text-only document for example. It all depends on who your audience is.
We also do Easy Read surveys, newsletters, web content, presentations and forms. We can advise you on the best approach for the audience you want to reach. As part of our services, we offer a consultation to talk about your goals and plan your project.
